Proposed TT comment - Oct 9, 2014
I thought about responding to this comment:
http://toledotalk.com/cgi-bin/tt.pl/article/184012/08Oct2014/Sandusky_Traffic_Stop_Debate/44#184126
"Mixed in with fun threads like "Who still has a landline?" this place is way more fun."
We do need more relevant questions:
- Who still uses Facebook?
- Who still has cable/satellite TV?
- Who still uses a printer?
- Who still reads printed newspapers?
I can answer "Not me" to all those questions, but each year, I expand our backyard garden to grow more produce. It's confusing.
Why embrace new technologies and new cultural changes while at the same time engage in obviously ancient rituals like growing a garden, brewing beer, and baking naturally-leavened bread?
Instead of scratching the procedure on paper or on a stone wall like the ancient Egyptians, I store the recipe in a homemade content management system that uses Linux, Nginx, Perl, JavaScript, MySQL, and Redis. And when it's time to make bread, I follow the procedure by reading the web page on my iPhone.
I like the bits and bytes of the digital world and the wild yeast microorganisms that are used to make beer and bread.
